Welcome to the NEW Video Game Mods

Welcome back! I’m excited to say that VGM has been completely rebuilt from the ground up. Everything is now designed with the future in mind. The platform is fully cloud-based, built to scale without limits, and faster than ever. Upload limits have been increased to 1GB per file, and download speeds are always uncapped (up to 100MB/s, depending on your connection).

Our old site had started to slow down and get buggy. We were storing around 900GB of data, much of it uncompressed images and unnecessary files. We’ve slimmed that down to just 195GB by cleaning house and converting every image to WebP. This now happens automatically on upload. We also removed all old comments so we could start fresh, eliminate spam, and reduce database bloat we simply didn’t need anymore.

The new site is built on Next.js with React and Supabase, making it fast, modern, and future-proof. Search and filtering are now quick and accurate. Mod thumbnails support previews, hover over them to automatically play the first three images and a YouTube video if one is attached. Uploading mods is easier, and file management is much better thanks to file tagging, which helps users quickly understand what each file does.

We strongly believe community-driven modding is the way forward. Similar to how Discord works (and how gamers already love to interact), creators can build and fully control their own communities. Multiple communities can even support the same game. Using the RAWG API, we connect games across communities and provide a unified view of all mods for each game.

There’s a lot more coming in the new year, including:

Member messaging
Following modders and getting notified when they upload new mods
More profile customization
Modpacks and batch downloading (yes, for free 😉)
Private communities that require invites, with mods hidden from “All Mods”
And anything else the community wants and makes sense to add
